Women’s Month Natural Hair Feature- Esther

Tell us about yourself

I’m a writer and creative fascinated by various forms of artistic expression: Music, design, fashion, art.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural for a year and a half.

Did you big chop or transition?

Not much of a big chop, went from having a bob to short short hair.

What inspired your natural hair journey?

I had an afro before while I was still in Varsity and transitioned because I felt like changing my hair. I decided to grow my fro back because I missed it.

What’s the one hair care item you cannot live without? And why?

ORS Argan Oil Hair Mayonnaise! My hair just feels alive after using it, even though it’s dead cells 😜

What advice do you have for the woman who wants to ‘go natural’?

Natural hair can either be fun to have or a nightmare, you choose! You have to allow yourself to get creative with it, it’s the best for personal expression I think. I always look at my hair as a customisable accessory, it can be anything I choose on any day 🤷🏾‍♀😂

One female role model and why she inspires you

There are so many! But at the moment it has to be Tracee Ellis Ross: She’s constantly working on herself and her career, despite being what society dubs as a “forgotten woman”. She also has an uncanny sense of humour and her smile just makes you feel warm from the inside. Also, have you seen her fashion sense?! She slays me all the damn time ❤ Other mentionables: Viola Davis, Sindiwe Magona, Janelle Monae before she started wearing pink 🤣

Who else is crushing on Tracee Ellis Ross?
